The Veluwe is a beautiful natural area in the Netherlands. One of the most fun activities you can do while staying at our Bed and Breakfast in Beekbergen, is spotting wildlife in the Veluwe. And if you are there in September you are in luck, because that is the period when the rutting season of the deer takes place. We give you some great tips in this blog!
Veluwe: a beautiful nature reserve
The Veluwe is one of the largest contiguous nature reserves in the Netherlands and is home to many different wild animals. With its vast forests, open moorlands and meandering streams, it is the ideal environment for animals. If you are lucky, during your walk you may come face to face with red deer, fallow deer, wild boar, foxes and maybe even badgers. Extraordinary, isn’t it?
Bronze age of the deer
In September, the rutting season of the deer in the Veluwe begins. You can hear the belling of the male deer, who want to impress the females and defend their territory. This is very spectacular to hear. If you are lucky, you may even be able to see it!
Take a nice walk
During your stay at our Bed and Breakfast, you can hike through the Veluwe and spot wildlife. Start your adventure early in the morning or late in the evening, when the animals are most active. Follow one of the many hiking trails that wind through the area and be surprised by the beautiful nature. Tip: it is also possible for Sonja to accompany you as a guide during your game drives. Just let us know prior to your stay and we will see what is possible!
Game spotting tips
To increase your chances of spotting wildlife, it is helpful to be quiet and patient. Move slowly and avoid loud noises. Wear comfortable clothes and good walking shoes so that you can easily wander through nature. To get an extra good view, it is recommended to bring binoculars.
